Week 3

This week was all about how children learn a language. We were divided into 6 groups and each group had to present on the subtopics in the first chapter of Susan Halliwell's Teaching English in the Primary Classroom which is Working with young language learners.Together with my group mate - Hafizzudin, Faiz, Sarah, Imah and Hanif,we were to present 1.6 - The Instinct for Interaction and Talk.

Basically this subtopic explains to us that children have the instinct to talk. Thus, they bring their instinct and attributes into the classroom. As a teacher, we should be alert with their instinct. We should use the instinct that they bring into the classroom to encourage them to talk. There are many ways that teacher can do to encourage the children to talk. In order to encourage the children to talk, teacher can set up the purpose for them to talk. Teacher should provide the children with good reasons why they should talk. This can be done through classroom activities such as information gap, group work, games, hot seat and dramatisation. When children are clear with the purpose for them to talk,it will lower down their anxiety level. Thus, they will have no barrier to talk and to express themselves. It is important for the children to talk, to use the language so that they can be good at talking. The only way to learn to use the language is by using the language.
